Dubai authorities have introduced a pilot program aimed at reducing working hours for selected government entities during the summer. According to the Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR), the ‘Our Flexible Summer’ initiative will cut work hours to seven per day for 15 government entities from August 12 to September 30, with work on Fridays being suspended.
Typically, government employees in Dubai enjoy a two-and-a-half-day weekend. However, under this new initiative, employees in the participating departments will benefit from extended weekends over the seven-week period.
While the DGHR did not specify which government entities will participate, it emphasized that the initiative seeks to enhance workplace flexibility, ensure safety during the summer, and improve work-life balance. The program is also expected to contribute to reducing energy consumption in government offices.
The DGHR conducted a survey to gauge the readiness of government agencies for reduced working hours. The survey results showed strong support, indicating a willingness to embrace changes that promote employee well-being and work-life balance.
The department will assess the initiative’s impact on employees and overall productivity. Research has shown that reduced working hours can lead to increased productivity. Sharjah’s experience with a three-day weekend reported significant increases in both productivity and job satisfaction among employees.
The DGHR will continually evaluate feedback throughout the pilot period and compile a final report detailing the initiative’s outcomes, recommendations, and feasibility for broader implementation.
Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, DGHR director-general, stated that the initiative aligns with the vision to empower human resources by developing innovative policies and smart solutions, enhancing employees’ quality of life and promoting sustainable government resource use.
