Taxi fares in Dubai have increased by 12 fils per kilometre due to a series of petrol price hikes over the last four months, according to Khaleej Times. The Dubai Taxi Company PJSC (DTC) has updated their fare structure, setting the new rate at Dh2.09 per kilometre, up from the previous Dh1.97.
This adjustment means that a trip from Al Barsha to Dubai World Trade Centre, spanning 25 kilometers, will now cost passengers an additional Dh3. The fare increase applies only to the per kilometre charge, with the initial flag-down rate remaining unchanged. Other public transport modes like the Dubai Metro, Tram, and buses have not seen a fare change.
The last significant fare adjustment occurred in July 2022 due to a spike in global oil prices. This time, the increase comes as oil prices fluctuate between $83 and $87 per barrel, an average rise of $4.53 since March.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) describes these adjustments as “dynamic changes” linked directly to fluctuations in local fuel prices. They also noted that in January 2023, fares were reduced by 22 fils, demonstrating the responsive nature of their pricing strategy.
Meanwhile, in Ajman, taxi fares have also seen an increase, rising by 4 fils per kilometre since March. However, Sharjah has not implemented any new fare changes, although bus fares on some routes have increased due to rising fuel costs.
