Dubai has renamed the Sheikh Zayed Road neighbourhood to reflect the iconic status of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower. The landmark, which celebrates its 14th anniversary, is the centerpiece of the Emirate’s most travelled road and is now lending its name to the surrounding area.
This change is the most notable among 28 new names listed by the Dubai Land Department for various neighbourhoods. The Sheikh Zayed Road area hosts a range of residential and commercial buildings, including apartments, office spaces, and hotels. The proximity to key destinations such as Downtown, Business Bay, JLT, and Dubai Marina makes it a sought-after location for investors, renters, and tourists, as noted by Bayut, a leading property classifieds website.
Additional changes include Motor City becoming Al Hebiah First, Ranches turning into Wadi Al Asafa 6, Sports City renamed to Al Hebiah Fourth, and Al Quoz 2 now known as Ghadeer Al Tair. However, the rationale and timing behind these name changes remain unspecified.
Recently, Dubai introduced a new system for road naming, with the Al Khawaneej 2 area being the pilot. This initiative has named roads after native trees and flowers, such as Al Ghaf Street, inspired by a popular local tree species. Other roads in the vicinity now bear names like Al Sidr, Basil, Al Faggy, Al Samr, and Al Sharish, celebrating the region’s natural heritage.
