With the escalating popularity of e-scooters and cycles across the UAE, they have undeniably become a favored mode of transport, especially for short distances. However, to ensure the safety of riders and pedestrians, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) issued an advisory this Sunday, reiterating the need for riders to adhere to set traffic regulations.
Residents and tourists are particularly urged to use designated tracks when riding bicycles and e-scooters. Violation of these rules can lead to substantial fines. Here’s what you need to be aware of:
- Carrying a passenger on a bicycle or electric bicycle: Dh200 fine.
- Carrying a passenger on an e-scooter: Dh300 fine.
- Not wearing required safety gear and helmet: Dh200 fine.
- Exceeding the RTA’s set speed limits on designated tracks: Dh100 fine.
- Riding recklessly and endangering life: Dh300 fine.
- Ignoring directional signs on roads and tracks: Dh200 fine.
- Children under 12 cycling without adult supervision: Dh200 fine.
The RTA emphasized these regulations on social media, aiming to raise awareness and prevent unnecessary fines. Riders are to keep in mind the maximum speed limit of 20km/hr on designated tracks, especially in residential areas and beaches. Furthermore, e-scooters are exclusively for those 16 years and above, and children below 12 years old cycling must be accompanied by an adult.
