Dubai Police warn pedestrians against jaywalking, urge caution on roads

Dubai Police are urging pedestrians to follow traffic rules and avoid jaywalking, citing the dangerous consequences of crossing from undesignated areas. According to a Khaleej Times report, the Naif Police Station has issued fines to 37 individuals this year for ignoring traffic signals and crossing roads in unsafe spots, putting both themselves and others at risk. Under Article 89 of the Federal Traffic Law, jaywalking carries a fine of Dh400.

Highlighting the dangers of such behavior, Dubai Police reported eight fatalities and 339 injuries in run-over accidents last year, with nearly 44,000 pedestrians fined for jaywalking in 2023.

Brigadier Omar Mousa Ashour, Deputy Director of Naif Police Station, stressed in the same report the need for pedestrians to adhere to crossing guidelines and ensure the road is clear before crossing. He also urged motorists to be vigilant and follow speed limits, as pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility.

In an earlier incident this year, both a driver and two jaywalkers were fined following an accident that left the pedestrians injured. The driver was fined Dh2,000 for not following traffic rules, while the pedestrians were fined Dh400 each for crossing from an undesignated area. The penalty for failing to give pedestrians priority at designated crossings is Dh500, along with six black points on the driver’s license.
