The Dubai Police are set to install ‘silent radars’ in residential neighborhoods, aimed at detecting a range of traffic violations beyond speeding, according to a Khaleej Times report. Unlike traditional radars, these devices do not flash, thus the name ‘silent radars.’
The new radars will monitor behaviors such as not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones while driving. A top official highlighted that the traffic laws apply equally within residential areas, with fines of Dh400 and 4 black points for not wearing a seatbelt, and Dh800 and 4 black points for using a mobile phone while driving.
Salma Mohammed Rashed Almarri, head of the Traffic Awareness section, assured that all behavioral fines are double-checked using video footage before issuance. Hassan Ali Taleb Alhamer from the Traffic Technology Department noted that Dubai’s advanced traffic control technologies detect various violations, including illegal U-turns and obscured license plates.
These high-tech radars can monitor multiple lanes and detect violations even if a vehicle is partially obscured. Additionally, they ensure motorists stop completely at pedestrian intersections, with a Dh500 fine for non-compliance.
The Dubai Police Command Control Centre uses cameras and large screens to monitor roads, manage traffic, and dispatch patrols and ambulances as needed. The goal of these systems is to enhance road safety, not merely to issue fines, as the police focus on maintaining a consistent and safe driving speed across the emirate.
