Dubai Police rescue 8 sailors after fishing boat collides with cargo ship

Dubai Police executed a daring rescue operation, saving eight sailors whose fishing boat collided with a commercial cargo ship off the coast of Dubai. The collision left the fishing boat in wreckage and caused injuries to three crew members, who were swiftly airlifted to Rashid Hospital for treatment.

Brigadier Dr. Hassan Suhail Al Suwaidi, Director of the Ports Police Station, revealed that the incident occurred as the fishing boat, carrying eight sailors bound for Dubai’s fish market waterfront, collided with the cargo ship. The impact caused the fishing vessel to break apart and drift two nautical miles before the cargo ship halted.

“Three sailors sustained various injuries and were promptly transported by the Dubai Police Air Wing to Rashid Hospital, while marine rescue teams rescued the remaining five sailors,” explained Al Suwaidi.

Due to its massive size, the cargo ship couldn’t enter the port, prompting Dubai Police marine rescue boats to evacuate the sailors despite challenging weather conditions and high waves caused by strong winds.

Al Suwaidi cautioned sea-goers against disregarding weather alerts, especially during this volatile time of year when sea conditions can change rapidly, heightening the risk of accidents and potential drowning. He stressed the importance of being vigilant, particularly for those who are not strong swimmers or underestimate these dangers.

Moreover, Al Suwaidi encouraged ship and boat captains to utilize the “Sail Safely” service available on the Dubai Police app.
