On Friday, Indian Customs officials seized 6,168 grams of gold worth approximately Rs 3.91 crore (nearly Dh1.7 million) at Chennai International Airport. Five passengers were arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt.
The seizure was made following a tip-off from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Chennai Zonal Unit. The Air Intelligence Unit intercepted five passengers who had arrived from Dubai on June 6, 2024.
Upon searching the passengers, officials discovered six gold chains of 24K purity and 10 bundles of gold paste. The gold paste was processed into seven solid gold ingots of 24K purity.
