Dubai Metro expansion: New underground blue line to connect red and green routes

Dubai Metro’s anticipated Blue Line, first discussed in 2006, is set to be revived and will feature most of its track underground. This recent announcement brings Dubai’s transportation system closer to other major cities with subterranean transit networks like London, New York, and Paris.

According to a report from Meed.com, the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) of the emirate has begun seeking contractors for the construction of the Blue Line. The project details suggest that around 15.5km of the 30m track will be underground. Of the proposed 14 stations, five will be designated as ‘underground stations’.

Besides the underground feature, the Blue Line will offer other notable advancements. The chosen contractor will be responsible for supplying 28 driverless trains, constructing a depot that can house up to 60 trains, and developing all related roads, facilities, and utility diversion operations.

In terms of integration, the Blue Line aims to connect the existing Red and Green lines and will operate on a similar electromechanical system as the current lines.

This move is not just a stand-alone initiative but part of the broader Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. This plan envisions placing 55% of Dubai’s residents within 800 meters of a significant public transport hub, emphasizing mass transit use, walking, cycling, and other flexible transportation methods.

Such a push towards mass transit aligns with Dubai’s commitment to reducing traffic and bolstering environmental sustainability.

The 2040 project also encompasses doubling green spaces, establishing green corridors, protecting nature reserves, and enhancing overall environmental sustainability in the city.
