Dubai Metro delayed as electric scooter smoke detected at Onpassive station

Passengers traveling on the Dubai Metro’s Red Line experienced a delay at Onpassive station today as smoke from an electric scooter triggered safety measures, Khaleej Times reported. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) promptly alerted commuters via Twitter about the delay, citing concerns over the scooter’s lithium-ion battery. As a precautionary measure, the RTA arranged alternative transportation through a bus service to assist affected passengers.

E-scooters have gained popularity in the UAE for their convenience, especially as first- and last-mile green mobility solutions. However, safety experts caution against using substandard scooters and chargers, as lithium-ion batteries can overheat, potentially leading to fires or explosions. While specific data on e-scooter incidents is scarce, a few cases of battery overheating and explosions have been reported.

To ensure safety while using e-scooters, riders are advised to follow several precautions. These include avoiding overnight charging or using substandard chargers, purchasing lithium batteries from reputable sellers, and staying vigilant for signs of battery failure. Additionally, installing smoke alarms near charging areas and using the correct charger for the battery are recommended practices to mitigate risks.
