Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is considering expanding its city and intercity bus services to accommodate increasing demand and enhance integration with other transit modes such as the metro, tram, and marine transport.
The proposal follows feedback gathered during the RTA’s recent ‘Talk to Us’ virtual session, where commuters shared suggestions on improving the bus network. Discussions included internal routes within Dubai and intercity connections to other emirates.
“The session concluded with actionable suggestions, including expanding the bus network to meet growing passenger demand,” the RTA was quoted as saying in a Khaleej Times report, emphasizing the importance of a seamless and efficient transit system.
From January to June 2024, buses carried 89.2 million passengers, accounting for 24.5% of public transport users in Dubai.
The proposal aligns with RTA’s broader traffic management strategies, including implementing flexible work hours and remote work policies, which studies show can reduce peak-hour traffic by 30%. The authority is also exploring initiatives such as increasing dedicated bus and taxi lanes, enhancing first and last-mile options, and promoting public transport use among employees.
