A jeweller in Dubai suffered a significant loss after being tricked by a fraudster. The jeweller, identified only as ‘S’, sold gold jewellery worth Dh23,900 to an individual who paid using a fake bank transfer.
The scam came to the forefront through the Dubai Public Prosecution’s ‘Crime and Lesson’ programme, aiming to educate sellers on the risks of non-cash transactions. S, a young manager eager to prove his worth while his father was away, was duped by a con artist who feigned interest in purchasing gold jewellery. After a failed attempt to pay by credit card, the fraudster proposed a bank transfer, showing S a deceptive confirmation screen on his phone and promising the funds would transfer within six hours.
The realization of the scam dawned on S only after the fraudster had disappeared with the jewellery, prompting him to contact the authorities. The quick response from law enforcement led to the arrest and prosecution of the culprit, who was sentenced to one month in jail and ordered to repay the value of the stolen goods.
