Dubai fines drunk driver AED 24,000, suspends license after multi-car crash and hit-and-run

Dubai’s Misdemeanour Court has ordered an African motorist to pay a total fine of AED 24,000 and suspended his driving licence for three months after finding him guilty of driving under the influence, triggering a road accident, and fleeing the scene after damaging three vehicles.

According to Gulf Today, the case began in January 2026, when Dubai Police received a report about a traffic accident in the Al Rafaa area.

A policeman told investigators that a team was dispatched to the scene, where it was discovered that the driver responsible had already escaped after colliding with three vehicles. Authorities later identified the suspect and circulated details of the vehicle before eventually arresting him.

During questioning, police said the suspect was found to be intoxicated, with test results showing a blood alcohol level of 153 mg, leaving him unable to maintain the concentration and control required for safe driving.

Court records stated that the driver admitted he ignored traffic regulations and failed to observe road conditions. He also confessed that he drove against the flow of traffic, initially crashing into a taxi before continuing and striking two additional vehicles, causing material damage.

He was also accused of violating legal obligations by leaving the crash site instead of stopping after the accident.

The case documents showed the court based its ruling on the arrest and inspection report, along with the defendant’s confession during interrogations and later in court through a video call from detention, where he admitted to driving under the influence and causing the accident.

In its decision, the court stressed that driving on public roads while intoxicated represents a serious threat to public safety and property, and remains a punishable offence even if no injuries are reported, noting that negligence and lack of caution formed the basis of the unintentional damage charge.

The court imposed AED 20,000 for consuming alcohol and driving under its influence, AED 2,000 for causing damage, and AED 2,000 for the hit-and-run offence, along with a three-month licence suspension starting from the date of the verdict.
