Dubai enhances public transport with facial recognition in new Nol system upgrade

Dubai’s renowned card-based ticketing system, Nol, is poised for a significant transformation as it transitions to an advanced account-based framework, incorporating central wallet technology. The Dh350-million initiative, detailed by a senior official to Khaleej Times, is scheduled for a phased completion by the end of 2025.

The revamp will introduce artificial intelligence capabilities, including facial recognition, enhancing the payment and travel experience for users. While the current Nol system operates with physical or digital cards, this method will persist alongside the new enhancements. The forthcoming system promises a myriad of innovative features, such as trip planning, booking, and pre-payment options via smart channels, as highlighted by Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Salah Almarzooqi, director of the Automated Collection Systems Department, emphasized the flexibility of the new system, allowing users to link multiple cards to their accounts and transfer balances conveniently. The system is not only user-friendly but also prioritizes security by linking cards to individual and company accounts, safeguarding personal and customer data.

This ambitious upgrade aims to streamline transit across Dubai, offering an enhanced payment system, operational improvements, and personalized services. The introduction of this digital payment system marks a significant leap in data utilization and analysis, promising a more efficient and secure travel experience for Dubai’s residents and visitors.

Since the launch of Nol cards in 2009, the RTA has issued over 30 million cards, facilitating daily mobility and transactions across various services in Dubai.
