A 21-year-old Ukrainian woman has been convicted of physical assault after striking a police officer who attempted to arrest her intoxicated companion in Dubai.
According to a Khaleej Times report, which cites records from the Dubai Criminal Court, the incident took place on January 1.The couple, a Russian man and a Ukrainian woman, were reportedly under the influence of alcohol at a dance club in Jumeirah Beach Residence. They tried to re-enter the club despite being asked to leave by security.
A police officer, who witnessed the disturbance, approached the couple, identified himself, and asked them to leave quietly in accordance with the club’s rules. The officer reported that the couple initially argued and delayed their departure. As they walked away, the Russian man insulted the officer with profanity. When the officer attempted to take the man to the police station, he fled.
During the chase, the Ukrainian woman intervened, striking the officer on the left side of his face to prevent her friend’s arrest. The club’s head of security confirmed the woman’s assault and the man’s verbal insult.
The woman was subsequently arrested. Both individuals denied the charges in court, presenting a document stating that the officer had waived his right to pursue the case. Despite their defense, the court found the woman guilty of assaulting a police officer and sentenced her to three months in prison, including time served. She will be deported after completing her sentence.
The case against the Russian man was dismissed as the officer waived his personal right to press charges for the insult.
