A Dubai-based Indian businessman and founder of Pure Gold Jewellers has pledged Dh1.5 million to secure the release of nearly 900 prisoners in the UAE ahead of Ramadan. Among them are individuals jailed for debts as small as Dh1,100 dating back to 2019.
Firoz Merchant’s initiative, part of his Forgotten Society project established in 2008, aims not only to settle the prisoners’ debts but also to provide them with airfare to return home and reunite with their families.
Merchant emphasized in a Khaleeh Times report the plight of these individuals, describing them as victims of misfortune rather than hardened criminals. He highlighted their marginalized status in society and stressed the importance of offering them a fresh start.
Reflecting on his past efforts, Merchant shared poignant stories of individuals he has helped in the past, including a case where he intervened to clear the debts of an Indian laborer charged with involuntary manslaughter.
Born and raised in Mumbai, Merchant’s own humble beginnings have fueled his dedication to helping others. He started his journey from poverty, eventually establishing a successful jewelry business in Dubai, which now spans over 150 stores across 12 countries.
Merchant expressed gratitude for the collaboration with UAE government authorities and emphasized his indebtedness to Lt General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan for entrusting him with this crucial work.
His recent donation of Dh600,000 to Ma’an, the Abu Dhabi Government’s platform for social contributions, further underscores his commitment to humanitarian causes.
Fatema Al Marzooqi, Executive Director of Community Engagement and Volunteering at Ma’an, praised Merchant’s contribution, noting its alignment with the organization’s objectives and the spirit of Ramadan.
