Dubai has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the city into a pedestrian-friendly hub with the launch of the ‘Dubai Walk’ project. Announced on Saturday, December 7, by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the initiative aims to build an integrated walking network spanning 3,300 kilometers.
The project, part of Dubai’s vision to redefine urban mobility, will kick off in two iconic locations: the Museum of the Future and Al Ras. These pathways will showcase Dubai’s futuristic aspirations and historical charm, respectively. The Museum of the Future area will feature a 2-kilometer-long climate-controlled bridge connecting key landmarks such as the Dubai World Trade Centre and metro stations, while the 15-kilometer Al Ras trail will highlight waterfronts and historical spaces.

In addition to pathways, the initiative includes constructing 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels, 112 kilometers of waterfront trails, 124 kilometers of green walking paths, and 150 kilometers of rural and mountainous tracks. Advanced cooling solutions will ensure comfort for year-round pedestrian use.
The project aligns with Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan and its 20-minute city concept, enabling residents to access essential destinations by walking or cycling within 20 minutes. It will roll out in phases, starting with areas like Al Barsha 2 and Al Mizhar 1, eventually expanding to 160 neighborhoods. Three major pedestrian bridges will also connect key districts, such as Al Nahda to Al Mamzar and Dubai Silicon Oasis to Dubailand.
To encourage walking, a smart application will be launched, allowing users to track their routes and earn points redeemable for discounts or e-wallet credits. The app will also highlight local attractions and events.
Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the project’s goal of enhancing residents’ quality of life, stating, “Dubai is building a city where people live the best, happiest, most comfortable, healthy, and balanced lives.” By 2040, Dubai aims to establish over 6,500 kilometers of interconnected pathways, setting a global standard for pedestrian-focused urban planning.
