Dubai’s advancement in airport technology led to over 21 million travelers swiftly passing through immigration in 2023, marking a 55% increase from the previous year. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai highlighted the efficiency of 127 smart gates across Dubai International (DXB) and Al Maktoum International (DWC) airports.
In a significant technological leap, these smart gates, particularly five enhanced ones in DXB Terminal 3, now feature facial recognition, allowing travelers to bypass traditional document checks and clear procedures in mere seconds. Emirates passengers in Terminal 3’s Concourse B enjoy the seamless experience of checking in, clearing immigration, and boarding using facial recognition.
These innovations are part of Dubai’s commitment to using biometric technology, combining facial and iris recognition, to streamline airport procedures. While some gates still require passport or Emirates ID scanning, the overall approach reduces airport waiting times significantly.
The smart gates, a concept introduced in 2002 and upgraded to contactless operations during the Covid-19 pandemic, are accessible to UAE and Gulf nationals, residents, and visa-on-arrival tourists upon registration. Brigadier-General Talal Al Shanqiti of the GDRFA underscored the pivotal role of these gates in enhancing travel efficiency and safety.
