Dubai achieves medical milestone with successful first liver transplant

Kings College Hospital London Dubai announced the successful completion of Dubai’s first-ever liver transplant. The operation, performed on November 29, marks a significant milestone in the region’s healthcare sector.

A 38-year-old woman was the recipient of this life-saving surgery, thanks to a liver donation from the family of a brain-dead individual. The transplant, which lasted four hours, has been hailed as a pioneering step forward in medical science.

Dr Tashfeen Sadiq Ali, chief medical officer at Kings College Hospital London, led the team responsible for this remarkable achievement. In a statement, Dr Ali expressed deep gratitude to the donor’s family: “We are very thankful to the donor’s family for their generous donation which enabled us to save the patient in time.”

The patient, who remains anonymous, had been suffering from advanced liver disease and was initially treated with medications. A thorough review and diagnosis were conducted upon her admission to the hospital, leading to the decision to proceed with the transplant.

After the surgery, the patient spent two days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), under close observation by medical staff. She was discharged 10 days post-surgery and has been reported to be recovering well.

Dr Ali emphasized the importance of post-transplant care, stating, “The patient is expected to adhere to a routine of long-term medications and regular follow-ups, including weekly blood tests. These are crucial in ensuring the continued success of this historic liver transplant.”
