DSWD kitchen logs over 200,000 meals for people facing involuntary hunger

More than 200,000 hot meals were prepared and distributed last year through the government’s community kitchen in Pasay City, reaching both first-time and repeat beneficiaries who experienced involuntary hunger, including street dwellers.

Data released by the Department of Social Welfare and Development showed that the Walang Gutom Kitchen (WGK) served 200,003 meals to 142,246 individuals in 2025. The kitchen operates out of the Nasdake Building in Pasay and caters to walk-in clients daily.

DSWD spokesperson and Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said the initiative focuses on the quality of food served, stressing that meals are planned and prepared to meet basic nutritional standards rather than merely addressing hunger. She noted that the number of meals served reflects the scale of nutritious food already provided to beneficiaries.

The WGK also functions as a food recovery hub, converting surplus donations from hotels, restaurants, and various organizations into freshly cooked meals. Dumlao said these partnerships make it possible to sustain daily operations while minimizing food wastage, with menus varying each day depending on available ingredients.

Beyond food donations, private companies, civic groups, and individuals also contributed manpower, volunteering as servers, registration aides, and crowd control personnel throughout 2025. Dumlao cited Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian as saying that while the department shoulders staffing and utility costs, most other aspects of the kitchen’s operations—from food supply to meal distribution—are supported by the private sector.

The Walang Gutom Kitchen was launched in December 2024 as a joint effort between government and private partners and was developed as a complementary initiative to the DSWD’s Walang Gutom Program, a food stamp scheme designed to ease hunger among disadvantaged Filipinos.

The Pasay-based kitchen currently provides breakfast and lunch to an estimated 250 to 300 beneficiaries each day. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has previously indicated support for establishing additional WGK sites nationwide as part of broader efforts to assist street dwellers and address involuntary hunger.
