The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is calling on restaurants, fast food outlets, and volunteers to support its newly-launched Walang Gutom Kitchen (WGP) in Pasay City. The initiative aims to combat hunger and reduce food waste nationwide.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, in a video posted on the agency’s Facebook page, urged businesses and individuals to contribute food and their time to the program. “We are looking for food and service donations. Those interested can visit Walang Gutom Kitchen at the Nasdake Building in Pasay City to volunteer as servers,” he said.
The WGP operates in a repurposed Philippine offshore gaming operator (POGO) hub and serves as both a soup kitchen and a food bank. Unsold food from hotels, restaurants, and fast food outlets will be collected and redistributed to address involuntary hunger.
Launched on December 16, the program primarily targets children, families, and individuals in street situations, providing them with nourishment and a chance to escape hunger. Gatchalian also committed to expanding the initiative across the country in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s goal of achieving a hunger-free Philippines.
“Through this program, we can not only address hunger but also prevent food from going to waste,” Gatchalian added.
