A tragic case of alleged parental negligence has claimed the life of a 28-day-old infant in India, after her father reportedly lay on top of her while intoxicated, leading to her suffocation.
Local authorities confirmed the arrest of 22-year-old Alakunta Shekar, who is now under investigation following the death of his newborn daughter at his in-laws’ home in Telangana on the morning of May 20.
According to a police report cited by the Times of India, Shekar returned home drunk between 5:00 and 6:00 AM and allegedly went to sleep without noticing that his infant daughter was lying beneath a bedsheet on the same bed. The baby’s mother, Sujatha, had also been asleep at the time.
The victim’s grandmother, Allepu Rajamani, filed a complaint later that day. She recalled a confrontation the previous night when Shekar reportedly came to their home and “knocked, and kicked the door multiple times,” demanding to take his wife home. The family denied him entry, she said.
Describing the heartbreaking moment, Rajamani shared: “My daughter woke up and screamed when she realized what had happened. We turned on the light, and when Shekar got up, we saw the baby bleeding from the nose.”
The infant was immediately rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Authorities have taken Shekar into custody, and a full investigation is currently underway.
