DPWH stops all road reblocking projects after reports of corruption

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has ordered an indefinite suspension of all road reblocking activities across the country, citing possible corruption in the implementation of such projects.

“Effectively now, I will be suspending all reblocking activities. And gagawa ako ng bagong department order on reblocking,” DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon announced during a press conference on Friday.

Dizon expressed frustration over reports of roads being repeatedly demolished and reconstructed even when they appear to be in good condition. “Bakit ba ang DPWH binabakbak ang mga kalye na parang okay naman para lang gawin ulit. Well, siguro, sa maraming pagkakataon, alam na natin kung bakit. Kasi pinagkakakitaan lang iyon. Pinagkakakitaan yung pagsisira. Pinagkakakitaan din ‘yung paggagawa ulit,” he said.

The DPWH chief clarified that the suspension does not cover legitimate maintenance work for damaged roads. He mentioned questionable reblocking activities recently discovered in Bocaue, Bulacan, and Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

Dizon added that a new department order will soon be issued to include stricter safeguards to prevent similar anomalies. He also urged the public to report any ongoing reblocking projects despite the suspension, warning that district engineers caught violating the directive will face suspension.
