DOJ calls Vice President Duterte a ‘self-confessed mastermind’ after assassination remark

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has labeled Vice President Sara Duterte a “self-confessed mastermind” following her controversial statement about an assassination plot against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.

DOJ Undersecretary Jesse Hermogenes Andres announced in a Palace briefing that legal actions are being prepared against Duterte, emphasizing that the Vice President is not immune from suit. A subpoena, set to be served on November 26, will require her to address her remarks, which she later claimed were taken “out of context.”

National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Jaime Santiago confirmed the issuance of the subpoena, noting that this marks the first time such a move has been made against a sitting vice president. He added that the Vice President’s statements could lead to disbarment proceedings, citing violations of the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability.

The DOJ is also considering charges of grave threats, sedition, and other criminal offenses, while maintaining that due process will be observed. Meanwhile, National Security Adviser Eduardo Año stated that the National Security Council is closely coordinating with law enforcement to investigate the potential threat.

In response to the subpoena, Duterte said she would cooperate with the investigation but also intends to ask her own questions. Prosecutor General Richard Fadullon echoed the DOJ’s concerns, stating that Duterte’s remarks may have broader legal and professional implications.

The incident has raised discussions about potential impeachment proceedings, with DOJ officials asserting that such a decision lies with Congress.
