DOH reports 171 new HIV cases among OFWs in second quarter of 2025

The Department of Health (DOH) reported 171 HIV infections among migrant workers from April to June 2025, highlighting continuing risks faced by Filipinos working overseas. Of these cases, 148 involved males and 23 involved females, with the majority linked to sexual contact.

Cumulative figures since 1984 show 10,990 documented HIV cases among migrant workers. DOH data indicate 10,763 were transmitted through sexual contact, 20 through needle sharing, nine via exposure to blood, and three from needlestick injuries. Transmission modes were unspecified for 189 cases.

Separately, the DOH recorded 4,979 newly diagnosed HIV cases nationwide in the second quarter of 2025. Men accounted for 4,705 of these cases, while 274 were women. Most infections were concentrated in Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Central Luzon, Central Visayas, Soccsksargen, Western Visayas, and Davao, which together made up 74 percent of the total.

Health authorities urged continued prevention efforts, regular testing, and treatment access, especially for high-risk groups and areas with sustained transmission.
