Sweden has unveiled an unusual initiative positioning itself as “the first country in the world prescribed by doctors.”
The program, called The Swedish Prescription, is promoted by Visit Sweden and designed as a tool for both healthcare providers and patients. It frames a visit to Sweden as a supportive measure for those dealing with stress, fatigue, or mild anxiety, while emphasizing that it is not a replacement for professional treatment. “Healthcare professionals should use their clinical judgement to determine suitability,” the document stated, underscoring that acute or severe cases must still be addressed through standard medical care.
The campaign highlights Swedish lifestyle habits with proven health benefits—such as cycling or hiking through extensive national trails, forest bathing in the country’s vast woodlands, practicing the daily ritual of fika, and experiencing cultural activities in uncrowded spaces. Visitors are encouraged to see these practices as more than travel experiences, but also as routines they can adopt at home for long-term wellbeing.
Sweden’s reputation as one of the happiest countries in the world and its emphasis on balance and belonging form the backdrop of the project.
