DMW warns OFWs after six arrested in Hong Kong for illegal side jobs

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has issued a stern reminder to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) after six Filipinos were arrested in Hong Kong for taking unauthorized jobs at a dental clinic.

DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac cautioned Filipinos abroad to avoid moonlighting or engaging in work outside the terms of their employment contracts.

“Let this serve as a serious warning – stay within the bounds of your employment contracts and visa conditions. Let us not engage in moonlighting. If your visa says you are employed for a specific job, stick to it. Anything outside that is a violation and could lead to arrest, detention or even deportation,” Cacdac stressed.

He underscored that host countries have the sovereign right to enforce immigration and labor laws, adding that such rules apply to all foreigners and are not acts of discrimination. “As guests in other countries, we are expected to respect and comply with their laws,” he said.

Cacdac also warned OFWs against quick-money schemes and emotional attachments that push them into illegal jobs, stressing, “It is not worth it.” He acknowledged the emotional and financial challenges faced by many migrant workers but urged them to remain cautious.

The six detained Filipinos in Hong Kong are awaiting legal proceedings. The DMW assured that it is working closely with the Philippine Consulate and the Migrant Workers Office to provide legal and welfare assistance to the arrested OFWs.
