The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) assured on Thursday, January 2, 2025, that it is committed to providing the best legal defense for an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) accused of killing her Kuwaiti employer’s child.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac confirmed that Philippine government lawyers have been deployed to assist the Filipina domestic worker, emphasizing her right to legal representation.
“She is entitled to a legal defense, and our lawyers are on hand to provide assistance,” said Cacdac in a television interview. “We are hoping to mount the best possible defense for her in this case.”
The incident, which has reached the prosecution stage in Kuwaiti courts, allegedly involved the child being placed inside a washing machine. The Philippine Embassy in Kuwait reported that the domestic worker may have been “depressed” at the time of the incident.
Cacdac noted that mental health considerations are being evaluated as part of her defense. “Our lawyers in Kuwait are exploring all angles, including the possibility of mental health issues,” he added.
