The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) kicked off a weeklong celebration on June 2 to honor the courage and enduring contributions of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), culminating on Migrant Workers’ Day on June 7.
Anchored on the theme “OFW@30: Bayan, Bayani, Bayanihan,” the celebration commemorates 30 years of OFW heroism and their vital role in shaping the nation. Activities are set both at the DMW Central Office in Mandaluyong and across regional and overseas offices.
“This momentous celebration reaffirms the whole-of-government cooperation for the protection and promotion of the rights and welfare of OFWs — from pre-migration, during their employment overseas, to reintegration,” the agency said in a statement.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac assured OFWs that the department remains committed to their welfare. “As we celebrate the strength and resilience of our modern-day heroes, rest assured that the DMW, the Home of the OFW, will continue to adhere to a rights-based approach of ensuring the utmost protection and empowerment of our OFWs,” he said.
The week’s lineup includes the opening of a 30-year milestone photo exhibit on labor migration governance, the launch of the National Reintegration Network Serbisyo Fair, and a Balikbayan Bazaar.
Other highlights include support for 100 recipients under the Livelihood Program for OFW Reintegration, a poster-making contest for members of the OFW Children’s Club, and wellness and entertainment activities for OFW families.
The celebration concludes on June 7 with major events such as the groundbreaking ceremony for the new DMW Central Office, the signing of a joint memorandum to formalize the National Reintegration Network, and a memorandum of understanding with the Commission on Human Rights — further strengthening the state’s promise to support and protect OFWs.
Secretary Cacdac stressed that under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s leadership, the DMW “will tirelessly work toward creating an environment where every Filipino worker is valued, respected, and given opportunities for growth and development.”
