DMW investigates poor living conditions and wage issues for overseas job applicants

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is actively investigating reports concerning substandard living conditions experienced by overseas job applicants housed by a recruitment agency in Las Piñas. According to a Phil Star report citing the DMW, a team has been dispatched to assess the situation and ensure the applicants’ welfare.

Several applicants have voiced concerns about restrictive house rules, particularly the prohibition on leaving the premises to purchase food or receive family visits. Additionally, there are allegations that the recruitment agency is using falsified documents, the DMW reported.

In a related incident, the Philippine National Police recently rescued 10 female victims from the same agency. These individuals have been relocated to a shelter in Mandaluyong for their safety.

Furthermore, the DMW’s main office in Mandaluyong was visited by 100 fishermen who were recruited by Buwan Tala Manning Agency for deployment on vessels in the Indian Ocean. The fishermen reported various grievances, including unpaid and incorrect wages, poor working conditions, irregular work hours, and being served expired food.

The DMW announced that multiple complaints will be filed against Buwan Tala Manning Agency in response to these serious allegations.
