DMW considers legal action over OFW remains mix-up

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is weighing legal action against a courier service allegedly responsible for mishandling the repatriation of the remains of Jenny Sanchez Alvarado, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who died in Kuwait.

Alvarado’s remains finally arrived in the Philippines on Thursday, a week after her family mistakenly received the body of her Nepali co-worker. The mix-up has raised concerns among her family about the thoroughness of the investigation into her death by Kuwaiti authorities.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac revealed during the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City that the DMW is studying potential claims and legal liability against the service provider involved. The provider stated in a letter that Kuwaiti authorities had labeled the remains, and no family members were present to verify the identity before shipment.

Alvarado reportedly died from suffocation due to coal smoke inhalation, but her family has expressed doubts, particularly after noting the suspicious condition of her co-worker’s remains. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) conducted an autopsy on Alvarado’s body to determine the exact cause of death, with findings expected soon.
