In a bid to highlight the severe consequences of distracted driving, the Abu Dhabi Police released a shocking video on social media last Friday showcasing three horrific multi-vehicle accidents captured on camera in the UAE capital.
In the first footage, a driver who was speeding and not paying attention to the slow-moving traffic ahead caused a multi-vehicle collision involving five cars. The initial impact set off a domino effect, culminating in one of the vehicles catching fire.
The second accident was similarly dramatic, featuring a car slamming head-on into the vehicle in front at an alarming speed, resulting in damages to three cars.
The third incident echoed the first, with a driver speeding into slow-moving traffic, instigating a horrific collision and subsequent fire.
The harrowing incidents spurred authorities to issue a stern reminder to all motorists to maintain focus on the road at all times, cautioning that serious accidents can occur due to various distractions, notably the use of mobile phones for calling, taking selfies, or browsing social media while driving.
In a statement, the police’s Traffic and Patrols Directorate emphasized the severe risks of distracted driving, urging the community to shun such perilous behaviours to protect lives and maintain public safety.
Penalties for distracted driving
Authorities reiterated that the fine for distracted driving stands at Dh800, accompanied by a penalty of four traffic points. The aim is to foster a culture of responsible driving and prevent tragic incidents stemming from avoidable distractions.
