The Department of Foreign Affairs has urged Filipinos in Iran to limit their movements and remain cautious as demonstrations linked to economic pressures continue to unfold across the country.
In an advisory released Friday, the DFA said it has been monitoring the situation involving an estimated 800 Filipinos currently in Iran, noting that none have been reported harmed or directly affected by the unrest so far. Members of the Filipino community were reminded to “avoid unnecessary movements, especially into crowded areas.”
Protests initially surfaced in Tehran on Sunday after shop owners shut their businesses to protest rising prices and prolonged economic stagnation. What began as a localized strike in the capital has since extended to several other cities.
Tensions escalated on Thursday when clashes were reported between demonstrators and security forces in multiple locations. Authorities confirmed six fatalities, marking the first reported deaths since the cost-of-living protests began.
The DFA said Filipinos who require assistance may contact the Philippine Embassy in Tehran through email at tehran.pe@dfa.gov.ph
or via WhatsApp or Viber at +989122136801.
