The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Wednesday that the repatriation of Mary Jane Veloso marks a positive milestone in the relationship between the Philippines and Indonesia.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo expressed gratitude to the Indonesian government for the humanitarian effort that facilitated Veloso’s return ahead of the Christmas season. He described the development as a testament to the trust and friendship shared by the two nations.
“This is a significant achievement for the bilateral relations between the Philippines and Indonesia,” Manalo said in a statement, also thanking President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for approving the recommendations that led to her repatriation and for his consistent guidance on her welfare.
The DFA also acknowledged the Department of Justice (DOJ) for its cooperation throughout the process.
Veloso, who spent nearly 15 years in detention in Indonesia for drug trafficking charges, arrived early Wednesday morning at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport aboard a Cebu Pacific flight. Upon arrival, she was taken directly to the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City.
Her return follows an agreement reached between the Philippine and Indonesian governments. Veloso continues to appeal for clemency or pardon from President Marcos.
