The Department of Education (DepEd) announced a significant decline of over five million enrollees for the 2023-2024 school year compared to the previous year.
According to data released on DepEd’s Facebook page on Tuesday, a total of 22,917,725 students have enrolled in public and private schools, state and local universities, as well as Philippine schools overseas. This is down from 28,035,042 enrollees recorded for the last school year.
The most significant number of students are enrolled in the Calabarzon (Region IV-A) with 3,488,180 students, followed by Southern Capital region (Region III) with 2,626,684, and the National Capital Region (Metro Manila) with 2,497,178 students.
The Cordillera Administrative Region reported the lowest number of enrollees with just 355,728 students. Additionally, 1,541 students have enrolled in Philippine schools abroad.
Classes in public schools commenced on Tuesday, August 29.
