Delta Air Lines has announced that each passenger on board the flight that crash-landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport will receive $30,000 in compensation. The airline emphasized that the payment is a goodwill gesture with no conditions attached.
The incident occurred on Monday when a Bombardier CRJ-900 aircraft, departing from Minneapolis, made a hard landing at Toronto’s main airport, flipping upside down upon impact. The plane was quickly engulfed in flames and thick smoke as it skidded to a stop, but all 80 people on board survived.
Authorities reported that 21 passengers sustained injuries, with one still hospitalized as of Wednesday. Emergency responders treated passengers for various injuries, including back sprains, head trauma, and anxiety.
Footage of the dramatic crash, verified by AFP, showed the aircraft hitting the runway forcefully, rolling forward as its wings were torn off before coming to a stop on its roof.
Canada’s Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation, with assistance from the US Federal Aviation Administration, Delta, and Mitsubishi, which now owns the CRJ aircraft line.
This accident adds to a series of recent air incidents in North America, including a deadly midair collision in Washington and a medical transport plane crash in Philadelphia.
