Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa is considering a trip to the Netherlands to visit former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over crimes against humanity charges tied to his administration’s controversial anti-drug campaign.
“Mag-try ako mag-apply ng Schengen visa kung issuehan ako. Pag may pagkakataon, before elections, sana makabisita muna ako sa kanya,” Dela Rosa said during an interview on Thursday.
Duterte was arrested by Dutch authorities on March 11 upon arrival from Hong Kong, based on a warrant from the ICC. He was immediately transferred to The Hague, where he is facing accusations of orchestrating and financing death squads that targeted suspected drug users and dealers during his presidency. He made his first appearance via video before ICC judges on March 14, with a confirmation hearing set for September 25.
Despite being a potential subject of ICC investigation himself, Dela Rosa, who once served as Duterte’s police chief, said he’s still determined to show support—even if it means taking a personal risk.
“Sige lang. I-detain lang ako. Pero pagpunta ako doon sa The Hague, mag-wig ako. Mag-wig ako para hindi nila ako makilala doon,” he said, half-jokingly referring to a possible disguise.
Dela Rosa, now seeking reelection, previously vowed to explore legal measures should the ICC attempt to arrest him for his involvement in the drug war. He has also criticized the current administration, attributing Duterte’s ICC ordeal to internal political agendas.
