A few months past a critical January 11, 2023, report by Khaleej Times, a reminder is in place about the serious consequences of misusing social media as per the Sharjah Police’s warning.
The misuse, encompassing behaviours contrary to public morals, can lead to defamation and damage to one’s reputation and honour.
Colonel Omar Ahmed Abu Al Zawd, the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Sharjah Police, had emphasized the necessity for positive and correct interactions on social networking sites. He revealed that the police take strict measures against those who misuse online platforms for insulting and defaming others.
Reflecting on the previous year, the department had dealt with 85 insult reports and six defamation reports using information technology, applying all legal measures against the involved parties.
The consequences of such online misconduct are severe. According to Article 43 of Federal Decree Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes, any individual found guilty of defaming or insulting others online can be subjected to imprisonment and a fine ranging between Dh250,000 and Dh500,000.
Colonel Al Zawd had called on the public to exercise caution and responsibility while using social media platforms, refraining from offensive comments or any behaviour that could harm others.
