Authorities in Sharjah confirmed that 19 people were injured in the massive fire that engulfed a 52-storey residential tower in Al Nahda on the morning of April 13, with the death toll rising to five.
According to a Khaleej Times report, the blaze, which started on one of the top floors of the high-rise, prompted the swift evacuation of hundreds of residents. More than 1,500 people of various nationalities lived in the building.
Emergency teams were alerted at 11:31 a.m. and quickly secured the area, clearing paths for civil defence, police, ambulance services, and Emirates Red Crescent teams, who worked together to contain the situation and assist victims.
Sharjah Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Colonel Dr. Ahmed Saeed Al-Naour, Director General of the General Administration for Operations and Security Support, extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He added that a criminal laboratory team is conducting site inspections to determine what caused the deadly fire. Legal procedures are now underway.
