In a remarkable third weekend, Disney/Marvel’s superhero comedy Deadpool & Wolverine raked in an estimated $54.2 million in North American theaters, pushing its global earnings past the $1 billion mark. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the film has now amassed $494.3 million domestically and $535 million internationally, according to Exhibitor Relations.
Meanwhile, Sony’s romantic drama It Ends With Us, produced by Blake Lively and based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, had an impressive debut with $50 million, marking one of the strongest openings ever for a romance film. Analysts predict the film will rank among the top all-time romance debuts, with Fifty Shades of Grey still holding the record at $85.2 million.
This weekend marked a significant milestone as it was the first time in August that two films grossed $50 million each in the same weekend, Variety reported.
Universal’s Twisters, starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, came in third with $15 million, while Lionsgate’s Borderlands, featuring a star-studded cast including Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart, took fourth place with a modest $8.8 million.
Rounding out the top five was Universal’s animated film Despicable Me 4, earning $8 million in its sixth weekend. Other films in the top 10 included Trap ($6.7 million), Inside Out 2 ($5 million), Harold and the Purple Crayon ($3.1 million), Cuckoo ($3 million), and Longlegs ($2 million).
