Cynthia Villar shrugs off possibility of becoming next House Speaker

Senator Cynthia Villar downplayed talks of becoming the next Speaker of the House of Representatives as she seeks to return to Congress representing Las Piñas City’s lone district in the 20th Congress.

When asked during the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum on Wednesday if she is ready to follow the footsteps of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as the country’s second female House Speaker, Villar was quick to dismiss any ambition for the top post.

“I just want to live a simple and productive life. Wala na akong masyadong ambisyon,” Villar said.

Arroyo made history in 2018 when she became the first female Speaker of the House, following a majority vote that removed then-Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.

While Villar is set to make a political comeback in the lower chamber—where she already served for three consecutive terms from 2001 to 2010—she pointed out that her situation is far different from Arroyo’s.

For now, Villar remains focused on returning to public service in a role she is already familiar with, showing no interest in gunning for the House’s top leadership.
