On Tuesday, what was supposed to be a joyous moment for Michael “Kikil” Alcoseba, 23, turned into a poignant ceremony as his mother and grandmother walked up the stage in his stead to accept his cum laude award at Lapu Lapu City College.
Alcoseba, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management, passed away from pneumonia on May 11, just days before the commencement exercises. His framed photo was carried to the graduation rites by his family, who accepted his award on his behalf.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Ahong Chan captured the emotional scene on video, noting that nearly everyone present was moved to tears and gave a standing ovation as Alcoseba’s mother and grandmother accepted the award. “I had goosebumps. He was taken by the Lord too early,” Chan wrote in his post.
Alcoseba’s sister, Juliet Hiyas, shared their family’s grief and pride in a separate post. “We are the saddest but the proudest. It was very difficult for us to attend the graduation without our brother,” she expressed. Hiyas described the emotional moment, saying, “It was very painful. Our mother joined the processional with your picture.”
Alcoseba was not only a dedicated student but also an active member of the Lapu-Lapu City Performing Arts as a dancer. He was a working student, supporting himself through school. “We are so proud of our little brother,” Hiyas added.
