The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Thursday that Covid-19 continues to cause approximately 1,700 deaths each week globally. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the importance of vaccinations for high-risk populations.
Despite the ongoing fatalities, Tedros highlighted a concerning decline in vaccine coverage, particularly among health workers and individuals over 60, who are among the most vulnerable groups. “WHO recommends that people in the highest-risk groups receive a Covid-19 vaccine within 12 months of their last dose,” he stated during a press conference.
The official tally of Covid-related deaths reported to the WHO exceeds seven million, though the actual number is believed to be significantly higher. The pandemic not only led to a substantial loss of life but also severely impacted global economies and healthcare systems.
Although Tedros declared the end of Covid-19 as an international public health emergency in May 2023, the WHO continues to urge governments to maintain virus surveillance and sequencing. Additionally, ensuring access to affordable and reliable tests, treatments, and vaccines remains a priority.
