Representative Marissa Magsino has filed a resolution urging the Congress to explore the possibility of setting up exclusive lounges for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) at international airports across the Philippines.
Magsino, who championed House Resolution 1305, emphasizes that the initiative can be actualized administratively through concerted efforts with airport authorities and relevant departments, thus sidestepping the lengthy legislative process. She expressed a preference for administrative action, contingent on the willingness and responsiveness of the concerned authorities to the increasing demand for such vital amenities.
As of now, the Philippines has seven operational international airports that cater to the ingress and egress of OFWs, including the prominent Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Metro Manila and the New Clark International Airport in Pampanga.
Highlighting the significant economic contributions of the OFWs, with remittances reported to be $36.16 billion in 2022 according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Magsino insisted that the OFWs indeed deserve better facilities. She envisions the lounges to be equipped with amenities such as Wi-Fi connectivity, battery charging docks, power outlets, passenger assistance desks, and environments conducive to relaxation including sleeping quarters and changing rooms.
The dedicated lounges would also offer essential services in times of flight delays or cancellations due to operational glitches, providing OFWs with a comfortable space to rest, refresh, and rebook flights during extended layovers.
Magsino urges for swift administrative action to foster a more supportive and comfortable transit environment for the OFWs, recognizing their pivotal role in sustaining the Philippine economy. She is hopeful that the collaboration between the governmental agencies and airport authorities would lead to the realization of the OFW lounges, enhancing the travel experience for Filipino workers abroad.
