Bus fares in Sharjah have surged by up to Dh3 on certain routes since Friday (March 1), as a consequence of a 17 fils increase in diesel prices this month, Khaleej Times reported.
According to the fare matrix disclosed by Khaleej Times, passengers commuting from Rolla in Sharjah to Mall of the Emirates in Dubai via Al Quoz (bus route 309) now face a Dh3 hike, with fares rising from Dh17 in February to Dh20 in March.
Similarly, intercity bus route 616 has seen an increase of up to Dh3, varying by destination. Short-distance fares have risen from Dh8 to Dh10, while longer distances now cost Dh30, up from Dh27 the previous month.
Bus routes 112, 114, 115, and 116 have also experienced fare hikes ranging from Dh1 to Dh3. However, routes 66 and 333 remain unchanged at Dh6 and Dh10, respectively.
In a separate development, the Ajman Transport Authority announced a 4-fil increase in taxi fares, effective March 1. The new rate stands at Dh1.83 per kilometre, up from Dh1.79 in February.
The price adjustments come against the backdrop of escalating fuel prices. Super 98 petrol now stands at Dh3.03 per litre, while Special 95 petrol is priced at Dh2.92 per litre. E-Plus 91 petrol costs Dh2.85 a litre. Diesel, on the other hand, is now priced at Dh3.16 per litre.
Although diesel prices for March have dropped by 3 fils compared to December’s Dh3.19 per litre, they are up by 16 fils from the start of the year when it was priced at Dh3 on January 1.
