Comelec invites viral pageant contestant for educational tour

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will welcome a 20-year-old pageant contestant on Tuesday, March 4, after she went viral for admitting her limited knowledge about the agency and revealing that she is not a registered voter.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said the contestant, who joined a beauty pageant segment on It’s Showtime, was invited to the commission’s office to help her understand the role and responsibilities of the poll body.

“We fully understand her,” Garcia said. “Maaring madami pa na katulad niya na kabataan o mga Filipino. It is our solemn duty to explain who we are and what we are doing.”

The contestant’s remarks gained attention on social media, especially after host Vice Ganda reacted, calling her response “bothersome.”

Garcia said the agency sees this as an opportunity to improve voter education, starting with those who may not be fully aware of the importance of their role in the electoral process.

“If she is converted as a believer then we can perhaps do the same for others. Voter education is the key,” he added. “It is our failure we have to rectify.”
