Comelec disqualifies Pasig congressional candidate Christian Sia over lewd remarks

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) Second Division has disqualified Pasig congressional candidate Christian Sia from running in Eleksyon 2025 due to his offensive comments targeting single mothers during a campaign event in April.

In a ruling released on Thursday, the Comelec Second Division granted the petition filed by Comelec Task Force SAFE, which sought to disqualify Sia from the 2025 national and local elections.

“Wherefore, premises considered, the Commission (Second Division) resolved, as it hereby resolves to grant the Petition,” the Comelec decision stated.

The disqualification order means Sia cannot continue his candidacy for the position of Member of the House of Representatives in Pasig City’s lone legislative district. Moreover, if Sia were to receive the highest number of votes in the upcoming election, his proclamation would be put on hold pending a final resolution.

Sia’s disqualification stemmed from his controversial remarks made during a campaign rally, where he stated that single mothers who are “lonely” and still have their period “may sleep with him once per year.” His comments drew widespread condemnation and led to the issuance of two show cause orders (SCO) by the Comelec.

In his response, Sia argued that his statements were protected under freedom of speech, claiming they were neither discriminatory nor a violation of women’s rights. Despite his defense, the Comelec maintained that his remarks were inappropriate and justified his disqualification.
