Chito Miranda, frontman of iconic Filipino band Parokya ni Edgar, took to Instagram recently to share his insights about the evolution of Original Pilipino Music (OPM).
Although many consider the ’90s as the Golden Age of OPM, Miranda believes that the present time deserves this title more.
In his post, Miranda fondly recalled the ’90s OPM scene, mentioning legendary bands like Eraserheads, Rivermaya, Siakol, Color It Red, Teeth, Wolfgang, Yano, and Razorback and expressed the joy of that era.
“Sobrang saya naman kasi talaga nun 90s… at kahit saan ka kasi magpunta, maririnig mo yung kanta ng mga banda,” he wrote.
However, he also shed light on the struggles of the era.
“Pero nung time na yun, we were all underpaid… kahit sobrang sikat na ng mga bands, para pa rin kaming mga 2nd class citizens compared sa mga mainstream singers and artistas,” he added.
While he had a soft spot for the ’90s, Miranda emphasized that today’s OPM scene is even more vibrant and artist-friendly.
“Artists and bands now don’t need mainstream media and recording companies anymore,” he stated.
According to him, this freedom has allowed musicians to produce music without compromising their artistic intentions.
Highlighting the progress in the industry, Miranda added, “bands and artists now get paid, and are treated, like celebrities.”
He pointed out the significant upgrades in today’s music festivals, mentioning improved stages and sound systems.
Giving a nod to both established and rising talents, Miranda said, “Mula sa mga oldies namin tulad ng PNE and KMKZ, hanggang sa mga younger artists like Ben&Ben, DecAve, Zack Tabudlo, Flow G, SB19, etc…all are now treated how artists should be treated.”
Ending on a high note, he celebrated the growth and glory of OPM, proclaiming, “Mabuhay ang OPM.🤟🏻😎”
