Chinese zoo under fire for dyeing dogs to look like tigers

A zoo in Jiangsu, China, is facing backlash after it was revealed that two Chow Chow dogs had been dyed black and orange to resemble tigers.

On January 24, the Qinhu Bay Forest Animal Kingdom showcased the so-called “tigers” during a livestream on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok. The zoo described the animals as “big and fierce,” but viewers quickly noticed their unusual features, questioning their authenticity.

Many online users criticized the practice, expressing concerns about the ethical implications of dyeing animals for attraction purposes. Some pointed out that the same dogs had previously been dyed black and white to appear as pandas in August 2024.

The zoo admitted that the fur coloring was a marketing gimmick to draw visitors. However, they claimed the dye was plant-based and applied in a professional pet grooming facility. They also assured the public that veterinarians and dedicated keepers oversee the animals’ well-being.

Despite these reassurances, skepticism remains. Experts warn that while pet-safe dyes may not cause immediate harm, repeated exposure could lead to long-term skin and fur issues.
