The Chinese Embassy in Manila has called on its citizens currently in the Philippines—or those planning to travel—to stay alert, citing what it described as rising security risks in the country.
In a travel advisory released this week, the embassy pointed to reported incidents involving Chinese nationals and businesses allegedly being subjected to increased inspections and harassment by local law enforcement. The advisory also noted the growing frequency of political rallies and public demonstrations, warning that these could pose safety threats to Chinese citizens.
This heightened alert comes on the heels of recent arrests of Chinese nationals near Subic Bay, where they were suspected of being involved in espionage activities. Another similar incident earlier this year saw two Chinese individuals and a Filipino apprehended over alleged intelligence operations.
“Public security in the Philippines has become unstable,” the embassy said in a translated statement, urging Chinese citizens to avoid political gatherings and minimize unnecessary movement.
Travelers were advised to carefully reconsider visiting the Philippines and to take necessary precautions if already in the country. The embassy also reminded nationals to follow local laws and stay vigilant against potential risks.
Emergency contact hotlines were also provided for Chinese citizens needing assistance, both through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing and local consular offices in Manila, Cebu, Laoag, and Davao.
